Madelaine Gnewski is a writer and linguist. Her work has been published in Friends on The Shelf, South 85 Journal, The Hemlock Journal, and elsewhere.
Influenced in part by her therapeutic training, Madelaine's writing explores family dynamics, memory, attachment, and the narratives people construct around intimacy and belonging. She writes across experimental and psychologically driven fiction and creative nonfiction.
Madelaine’s experimental essay, ‘10 Ways to Mother’, published in South 85 Journal, was nominated by the editors for the Best of the Net Anthology in 2022.
She was invited to read her experimental essay, ‘The Bromeliad’, published in Friends on The Shelf, Issue 12, at the magazine’s launch event in 2025.
Her work was recommended to Esther Freud by a fellow writer, after which she joined Freud’s writing group in London in early 2026.
‘Marital Animal’, Madelaine’s short story published in May 2026 in The Hemlock Journal, Issue 10, was later selected by the editors for the journal’s curated print edition.
